Are 'Shales' really that dull?
Presented by Joe Macquaker at the Geologists Association from the T.B.C.
Fine-grained, organic carbon-rich sediments are enigmatic.
Their fine grain size and homogenous appearance in hand specimen causes geologists to assume that they were deposited by suspension settling where primary production was high, and the water column was oxygen restricted.
Their similar appearance and widespread occurrence implies that they were deposited as regional drapes.

Trace fossils: footprints and burrows - evidence of life when there are no bones, teeth, shells etc.
Presented by Maurice Tucker from the University of Bristol
This talk will discuss the evidence for life in sedimentary rocks when there are no actual fossils, but just the traces left behind by animals and plants going about their business.
In particular, footprints and burrows will be discussed, which reveal that in many instances there was abundant life on and beneath the surface – in the deserts and on floodplains, and in shallow seas too.
To attend the meeting, members and non-members should register in advance.
Non-members should email the Secretary (sarah@geologistsassociation.org.uk) for details and registration.
